The next wave of obesity medicines in trials
A record number of new obesity medicines are being tested in trials right now. Most are still years from approval, and none are sold in India today.
Big new obesity medicines are being tested in trials right now. Some mix three gut hormones in one shot. Some come as a pill. One works only once a month. This is the busiest obesity pipeline (the list of drugs being developed) the world has ever seen. But busy is not the same as ready. Most of these drugs are still years from approval. None are sold in India today.
Why so many new drugs?
Today's approved obesity shots work on one or two gut hormones. Gut hormones are signals your gut sends after you eat. They tell your brain you are full and slow food leaving your stomach. The best approved shots help people lose about 15 to 22 percent of body weight. Drug makers now want more weight loss, easier dosing, and fewer injections. So they are mixing two or three hormone signals into one drug, or blocking new targets. One new approach even grows muscle while it cuts fat.
The next-wave drugs at a glance
Every drug below is still investigational (being tested, not yet approved). The 'idea' column says how it works. The 'phase' column says how far the trials have reached. Phase 3 is the last big test before a company asks for approval.
These new drugs will reach India soon, so I can order them online now.
mostly falseMostly false. Every drug in the table above is still investigational, which means not yet approved by any regulator. Even the closest ones (orforglipron, cagrisema) have only just been filed for approval and are not sold anywhere yet. None are sold in India today. Ordering unapproved 'pipeline' drugs online is unsafe. Many online listings are fake, the wrong dose, or stored badly. Do not seek or buy these drugs online. Talk to your doctor about medicines that are already approved and available.
What to do while you wait
You do not need a future drug to start today. Here is how to think about the pipeline and your own plan.
The bottom line
The obesity medicine pipeline is the biggest it has ever been. But 'in trials' is not 'in the pharmacy'. None of these next-wave drugs are sold in India today. Use medicines that are already approved, with your doctor's help, and do not buy unapproved drugs online.
