Stuck for days, then a sudden drop - why?

Sometimes the scale sits flat for days, then drops a whole kilo overnight - the 'whoosh'. It does not mean you lost that fat all at once. You were losing fat the whole time, but water was sitting on top of it, hiding the drop. When the water finally releases, the scale catches up in one go.

plateau water-weight whoosh

You eat the same, walk the same, and the scale does not move for six days. You feel stuck. Then one morning it drops a full kilo. People call this the 'whoosh'. It feels like magic, but there is a simple reason under it.

If the scale is stuck for days, no fat is being lost at all.

mostly false

Mostly false. You can be losing fat steadily while water hides it. Your body stores glycogen (sugar) with 3-4 g of water per gram, and salt holds extra water too. That water can sit on top of real fat loss and keep the number flat. The fat is going - the scale just can't see it yet.

The whoosh means I lost all that fat in one night.

false

False - and this one matters. The fat was lost slowly over the stuck days. The whoosh is just the water finally letting go, so the scale shows the drop all at once. You did not lose a kilo of fat overnight; you lost it over the week, and the water was lagging behind.

Ride out the flat days

  • Stay on plan through a flat stretch - the whoosh usually comes if you hold steady.
  • Keep salt roughly normal; very salty days add water that masks fat loss for days.
  • Sleep seven hours - poor sleep raises water retention and hunger.
  • Use the waist tape and clothes fit too; they often drop before the scale does.

The bottom line

The whoosh is water releasing, not fat melting in a night. You lose the fat slowly over the stuck days; the water just hides it until it lets go. Stay on plan through the flat stretch, and the scale will catch up in one satisfying drop.

Real fat loss is ~7700 kcal per kg - the whoosh is the water on top, not the fat itself.
